A support group has been set up to help alleged victims of a Sidcup-based gynaecologist Rod Irvine, who may have removed the wrong organs and performed operations unnecessarily.

He worked across Kent and south east London but News Shopper revealed last summer his treatment of 66 women is under scrutiny.

Some of the allegations made against him have now come to light through solicitors Bolt Burdon Kemp who are helping 28 alleged victims.

Bolt Burdon Kemp’s medical negligence lawyer Catherine Bell said:“We decided to set up the support group to because we felt it was important the women we are advising could benefit from therapy and support without delay.”

“The group is led by a trained therapist who has counselled women in similar situations before before.”

“Gynaecological treatment is a sensitive and emotive subject for many women so it can be particularly difficult when they suffer injuries as a result of substandard care.

“For example, some the women who have sought advice from us may have had their lives put at risk by unnecessary or poorly performed surgery, whilst others  may have lost their ability to have children.

“It is not uncommon for women in this position to suffer emotional and psychological trauma, which may have a long-lasting effect on their lives.”

The support group met for the first time earlier this month and meetings will continue to take place fortnightly between now and the end of May 2014.

A sample review of 255 of Mr Irvine’s patients conducted following his suspension by South London Healthcare Trust in November 2012, showed concern over the treatment of 49 women and more serious cause for concern in the case of 17 women.

The now dissolved trust wrote to nearly 2,000 women who have had operations or other procedures performed by him since he joined the trust in 2002.

Rod Irvine is currently suspended from practising by the NHS Trust and has had interim conditions placed on his registration by the General Medical Council.

When are these compo chasers going to get a life....the harm they have caused to a very decent person is unbelievable. Perhaps they should look closer to home to solve their so-called problems.

The majority of women treated by Rod Irvine are very happy with his treatment and are absolutely horrified that the minority and the press can be doing this, just for the money that they probably won't get if the majority have anything to do with it, because the minority will be shown to be just troublemakers.

There are other consultants from the now defunct South London Healthcare NHS Trust, who have done horrendous things to women, but it is they who have made Rod Irvine a scapegoat for their own misdemeanours, when he has done nothing wrong!

I am very pleased that the ladies in your familes have received good care from Rod Irvine.
My mother did not get such good treatment (and we have seen the reports of the sloppy care he and QM meted out to her during her botched op, so don't bother defending him - his own words have condemned him in this particular case) but far from wanting monetary compensation, all my mother needs is some decent aftercare to relieve her problems from a competent gynaecologist . She has no axe to grind into Rod Irvine and is distressed that he has let her down like this, as she trusted him.
Please don't be so quick to rush into judgment on these ladies and desist from making spiteful comments about their very real problems.
