Youngsters from Swanley and Dartford helped make dresses for around 50 kids in Kenya.

Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Swanley and Darent Valley Division learned about Kenya, Eynsford Scout Hut in Priory Lane, after one of the area’s District Commissioners, Angela Brewer, visited it last year and was moved by the children living in the slum towns.

Girlguiding began 100 years ago and aims to help young women develop skills so they can make a positive contribution to their community and the wider world.

Leader Amanda Gornell said: "During the day, the girls learnt about life in Kenya and about the life of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, the founders of Guiding and Scouting.

"They also learnt about the work of WaterAid.

"However, the main focus of the day was to make pretty dresses to send to some of the children living in the slums.

"The Rainbows, Brownies and Guides enjoyed making and decorating pillow case dresses.

"By the end of the day around 50 dresses were ready to be sent out to Kenya later in the year."

The event tied in with the group’s Thinking Day celebration.
