A Smart car was set alight at a Sainsbury’s petrol station yesterday morning which resulted in four fire engines being called to the scene at East Greenwich.

A total of 12 people had to be evacuated from the scene while the London Fire Brigade isolated the electrical supply to the pump to prevent the flow of fuel.

Engines from East Greenwich, Greenwich, Lewisham and Poplar worked hard to tackle the blaze at 9.15am which had also set alight a police car and a petrol pump.

The huge fire on the forecourt in Bugsbys Way was described as ‘very serious’ by the London Fire Brigade however, no injuries were reported.

The brigade were called at 9.14am and have said the cause of the fire was believed to have been a car fault.

More to come.
