An enterprising retired Eltham teacher has decorated a wall in Avery Hill’s Winter Garden with photos of butterflies and wildlife from around the globe.

The exhibition is the brainchild of Richard Winston, who spotted a temporary white wooden wall in Avery Hill Park's Victorian conservatory which boasts tropical trees and plants.

The 66-year-old former languages teacher felt his photos would be fitting for the hothouse which was founded by entrepreneur and globetrotter Colonel John Thomas North in the 1880s - the then second richest man in the world.

Mr Winston shares Col North’s passion for far-flung places and has snapped creatures including in South Africa, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, Costa Rica and Ecuador.

The father-of-one, who lives in Halfway Street, said: "I spotted a temporary white wooden wall in the west wing of the garden. The thought immediately struck me this would be a great place to set up a photo exhibition.

"I showed some of my framed pictures to people there and it was eventually agreed I could set up a display."

Col North made his fortune by exporting fertiliser from Chile and the London County Council acquired the site in July 1902 which is now maintained by Greenwich University.

Mr Winston added: "The exhibition is also in support of Greenwich University's desire to open up the Winter Garden for more engagement with and use by the local community.

"This in turn helps their bid for lottery funding to renovate it."
