Bromley conservative councillor Alexa Michael has waded in on the 'women who eat on tubes debate', saying women who have been photographed shouldn't have been eating to begin with.

'Women who eat on tubes' is a controversial Facebook group and Tumblr blog which posts photographs of women consuming food on the underground.

It has enraged members of the public, who see it as an invasion of privacy, leading campaigners to plan a lunch-time sit in on the Circle Line next week in protest.

Coun Michael, of the Bromley Common and Keston ward, texted the Metro newspaper this week expressing her views.

She said: "For those women who dislike being photographed while eating on the tube, I have a simple solution - don't eat on the tube.

"Eating on the tube is antisocial and public transport would smell much fresher if people refrained from eating while travelling."

She told News Shopper: "I think there's a time and a place for everything and eating on the tube is not one of them.

"It is anti-social, if it's smelly food it makes the whole tube smell.

"It is completely inconsiderate of other passengers."

On the Tumblr blog, Tony Burke, the man responsible, writes: "Everywhere I go I see women eating on tubes.

"Like little mice hiding packets of crisps and biscuits in their bags and purses.

"Slowly, secretly, guiltily raising each bite-sized morsel to their salty lips in the hope that no one’s watching.

"Well, I’m watching. And I’m photographing, documenting the fascinating world of the Women Who Eat on Tubes."

Why 'women who eat on tubes'? Surely it applies to either sex or can food nowadays differentiate between the two and choose itself to be either smelly or not?

There has to be exceptions: I was stuck on a LB bound train yesterday for an additional hour due to a broken track. After being on the train for 1 hour and 20 mins if a jobsworth or fellow passenger had asked me to stop eating my tracker bar my belly would have rumbled more in anger rather than hunger!

Never heard of this site, and I certainly won't be visiting it any time soon. Why do I want to see pictures of people eating on a tube? Anyone taking the photos or looking on this site should take up train spotting as it will be a positive move to become less of a saddo!

As for the issue of eating on public transport, personally no issue with it.

Why just women? Don't men eat on trains or public transport also? That's kind of sexist.
Men are just as guilty of eating and smelling confined areas out with food and discarded food wrappings as women. It works both ways.
Either way, I do't mind if they do eat on tube/train/buses, providing the food does not stink the place out, however, I do mind if they discard their waste packaging on transport floors/seats etc for others to have to sit near or wade past, or put up with the smell left on them, that's when they should not be eating on public transport. If you cannot be responsible when discarding the waste then don't eat on public transport.

Why should other people have to smell or watch someone eating on the train ? Last night I was on a bus and some girl had a takeaway Chinese eating it from a pot in her lap stinking the bus out. It's just classless.

What an intolerant society we are becoming these days. Who gives a **** if someone is eating on a tube/train. People are so busy trying to earn a crust (pardon the pun) there is often little time to eat a proper meal.

As for a councillor 'wading in' to this debate, surely she should be doing something more productive with her time like helping constituents.

How I laugh when those involved in politics take the moral ground on something so insignificant when the expenses scandal, ie committing fraud against the taxpayer, is still a bad taste in the mouth.

This thread of posts is classic. So it's classless to eat on a train? Obviously never travelled 1st class on a decent train then.

Totally agree, there is the question of people's choice of food though, things that smell strongly for example or setting out an entire meal on the central line at 7pm....
