A TODDLER who ran into the road towards her mother was killed by a car travelling “too fast” at 32mph, an inquest has heard.

Three-year-old Riya Aryal died of a broken neck after being hit by a Volkswagen Golf in a 30mph zone, in Grassmere Avenue, Wembley..

Her mother, Bishnu, of Lethbridge Close, Lewisham, said in a statement they had been visiting friends when the accident happened last June. The little girl was about to be taken for a drive by a family friend when he asked Mrs Aryal to help him with the car seatbelt.

She said: “I left the house but did not close the front door. When I looked back Riya was walking towards the road.

“I shouted and waved for her to stop. I saw there was a car travelling from my left it was travelling quickly.

“I thought Riya would stop or the car would slow down. I heard a bang and a long screech.”

French driver Elise Dupaty, of Bayswater, has been charged with driving without due care and attention. She told police she saw the child, braked and tried to avoid her.

Accident investigator Malcolm Cumberlidge said she could not have avoided a collision at any speed over 28mph, and 32mph was too fast for the road.

Hornsey coroner Dr William Dolman recorded a verdict of accidental death.
